How to Diffuse Hair

Girls with curly hair know that taking care of our beautiful mains requires effort and a host of tools. Diffusing your hair is one of the best ways to rid yourself of frizz and lock in your magnificent curls, whether you have wavy or curly hair.

If you aren’t entirely sure what diffusing is or how to do it, then we’ve got your back. Read our guide on how to diffuse hair so that you can have bouncing curls that turn heads.

Why Diffuse Your Hair?

Most people think their hair will experience heat damage if they use diffusers to lock in their curls, but that’s usually not the case. Using a lower heat and speed setting can prevent such damage.

The diffuser attachment reduces the harshness of a regular hairdryer and creates less frizz because it doesn’t irritate the cuticles. It will also enhance your curls, making them last longer.

Can I Start Diffusing with Wet Hair?

You can start diffusing your hair right away if you wish. Most stylists recommend waiting between 30 minutes and an hour before you begin the process.

If you have the time, let your hair dry naturally and then diffuse. Start as soon as you’re out of the shower if you only have 10 minutes to get ready.

Four Different Diffusing Methods for Diffusing

You can try various methods to diffuse your hair. These will form part of your hairstyling routine.

Pixie Diffuse

You can use this method while your hair is still wet. It takes about 45-minutes. To start, channel your inner yogi and stand in a forward fold, flipping your hair upside down.

Gather it all up into the diffuser and dry it for about five minutes if your hair is thicker. One to two minutes is better for thin hair.

Stand upright and touch up any spots you feel are out of place by placing the diffuser and different areas around your head.

Net Diffuse

Grab a pair of stockings or any other hair mesh type thing. Place it on a flat surface, place your hair in the center, and then pull it tight over your head. Stand straight and place the diffuser on different areas of your head.

It takes about 30-minutes to dry your hair almost completely. Most people don’t like this method as it doesn’t always produce the lush curls it promises.

Hover Diffuse

You hang upside down almost the whole time when you use the hover diffuse method. Start at the roots, keeping the diffuser a few inches from your scalp. Constantly move your hairdryer around rather than holding it in place.

It takes about 40 minutes to complete the entire process.

Hammock Diffuse

Place your hairdryer with the diffuser attached on a flat surface where it won’t fall off when it’s on. Grab a t-shirt or towel, and then switch your diffuser on. Flip your hair upside down and cradle it in your hands.

Stand in front of the hairdryer, starting at the roots. As your hair dries, slowly move to the tips. The whole process takes around 35-minutes.

How To Diffuse Your Hair

Follow these simple steps to diffuse your hair in a way that will keep it strong and give you the best curls.

1. Wash Your Hair and Use Leave-In Conditioner

The first step is to wash your hair and then apply a leave-in conditioner of your choice. It will reduce frizz and protect your hair from heat damage.

If you have wavy or oily hair, leave this step out. The extra moisture will weigh your hair down and stop it from curling as you want.

You can try the rake and shake technique. Separate your hair into five sections, one in the front and two on either side of your head. Use your fingers or a comb to brush the leave-in conditioner through your hair evenly.

You can try to raise the hair up between your fingers and shake it loose to form curls naturally.

2. Bring in Some Volume

If you want to add some extra volume, place duckbill clips in your hair. Put them in at an angle right near the roots to create a lift between the layers of your hair.

Skip this step if you’re happy with the volume you have or want a softer curly look.

3. Choose the Right Diffusing Method for Your Curls

Pick one of the diffuse methods we described above or use your own. Test them out until you find the one that works best for your hair.

Consider the time it takes to follow different diffusing methods before choosing one.

4. Use a Hairspray to Keep Everything in Place

Once you’re finished diffusing your hair, use hairspray or mist to keep everything in place. You want your curls to hold their shape throughout the day.

5. OPTIONAL – Add a Serum to Keep Your Hair Healthy and Make It Shine

If you want to keep your hair extra healthy, use a serum for curly and wavy hair. It will lock in your curls and keep your hair strong.

The Do’s of Diffusing Your Hair

Now that you know how to diffuse your hair, here are some extra tips and tricks to help you get the perfect curls.

  • Switch things up – Every now and then, while diffusing your hair, give it a burst of cold air. It dries your curls faster and helps you see if they are dry or not. It secures your beautiful locks in place by closing the cuticle properly.
  • Use a lower speed but high heat – Using a lower speed prevents your hair from blasting out the diffuse attachment. It also slows the drying process, which helps lock in your curls. Using the high heat, along with bursts of cold, will give you perfect curls.
  • Definitely flip your head – You don’t have to stand upside down the entire time. Starting the diffuse process with your hair flipped over often creates better curls.

Diffusing your hair is a fun process that can help you lock in your curls. You can prevent heat damage by using a leave-in conditioner before drying your hair and adding a serum at the end.

Follow these easy steps to diffuse your curly or wavy hair for that perfect look when you leave the house.
